Speaker: Russell Graves
Website: https://www.russellgraves.com/index
Program: Wildlife Photography
Bio: If you've read any Texas-based magazines over the past thirty-plus years chances are you've seen some of Russell's photos or read some of his words. Since 1989, he's been traveling the state telling authentic Texas stories with his camera and his words - both written and spoken.
A graduate of Dodd City High School and East Texas State University, Russell was an ag science teacher in Childress, Texas for 16 years where he was named Texas Agriscience Teacher of the Year on three occasions.
After leaving that career in 2009, he continued to photograph, write, and speak about his experiences and the people he meets, and in 2010, he began delving into television production. His first documentary film, Bois d'Arc Goodbye was filmed entirely in Fannin County and chronicled his and his brother Bubba's canoe journey as they traversed the creek before a lake forever changes the landscape. The film aired three times to a prime-time, national audience.
He's worked with such celebrities as the Robertson Family from Duck Dynasty television show, T. Boone Pickens, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Pat Green, and Tracy Lawrence, but he insists that regular people are his favorite subjects.
Recently, much of Russell's focus has pivoted to leading educational photo tours. In addition, he's turned his attention to writing two new books that should be released soon.
Currently, Russell lives in the country north of Dodd City, Texas with his wife Kristy and their two children Bailee and Ryan where he recently bought a small farm. He spends a considerable amount of time creating content for clients but still finds his passion in working and developing the land.

Through two YouTube videos on this subject we will delve into guidelines that will help both novice and the experienced photographer improve their compositions.

Bio: I’ve been into photogaphy for over 60 years; seriously so for the last 20. Landscape photography is a love of mine and that fits well with a love of travel. I enjoy doing event photography work for various non-profits and for my church. Since early 2019 I have been into bird photography with all of its challenges and learning about the birds themselves. When not out doing those, I enjoy night sky photography and work to improve that part of my skillset. For most of my years I used Nikon but switched to all Sony mirrorless in 2016. I truly enjoy and value the associations formed within our photo club. TAPC provides us a supporting environment to learn about and share insights into various photograpic topics and to keep ourelves challenged and growing in our photo pursuits.

Presentation PDF
Program: The Art and Beauty of Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) Photography
In her presentation “The Art and Beauty of Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) Photography” Stephanie shares her passion for ICM and talks about her journey from traditional landscape photographer to focusing primarily on ICM photography. Stephanie has a deep love and joy for the individually expressive nature of ICM and encourages photographers to ‘see things differently’ through the lens of their cameras, as well as through the lens of their inner creative selves.
The art and beauty of ICM photography is that, by seeing things differently, we can connect with the ordinary, and even the mundane, to transform how we interact with our surroundings...to explore, experiment, and play with the camera in exciting new ways, resulting in images that are unique to each individual photographer.
In this talk, Stephanie covers some of the basic ICM principles and techniques, along with sample images to show the effects of various camera movements and the camera settings for each. Additionally, several examples showing scenes before and after using ICM will be shared, as well as a short field work video to show some of the camera movements Stephanie uses in different location settings. Stephanie also touches on some more advanced ICM techniques in this presentation, as well.
Bio: Stephanie is a self-taught creative photographer, who has been primarily focused on ICM photography for several years and has honed her ICM techniques by getting out to do the work as often as possible. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduate work in English Literature and has always had a very strong emotional connection to Art in all its various forms, as well as to the natural world. Stephanie has a deep passion for creating uniquely artistic images by working with camera movement to paint how any given scene feels for her in the moment. She brings an inter-connected, creative, and intuitive approach to her photography-as-art to visually express the essence of light, color, form, line, texture, mood, and emotion through in-camera creative techniques with the camera.
Stephanie is the Founder, Creator, and Publisher of ICM Photography Magazine (ICMPhotoMag)...a first-of-its-kind e-magazine dedicated solely to featuring ICM images, articles, reviews, interviews, tips, and tutorials, by ICM photographers and artists around the world, in a quarterly feature packed digital format.

Speaker: Mark Lenz
Program: Keeping the Past Alive through Living History Photography
Living historical events are a great way to learn about the past. Mark Lenz has been extremely interested in WWII history since his high school days and has been to Normandy twice for tours of the D-Day battlefields. Over ten years ago, he found out that there was a WWII living history event in Waxahachie with reenactors in historically accurate uniforms, period camps, WWII firearms and other weapons, WWII era vehicles and a live battle reenactment. Such events allow us to step back in time and experience what life was like for our fighting boys and men during WWII. He has attended many more events in Waxahachie and other locations around Texas since then, getting to know the people who participate in such events, and why they do it. Through his photography, he hopes to capture the passion that the participants have in keeping history alive.
In his presentation, he'll show some of the photographs he has taken at WWII living history events. He'll talk about the challenges and rewards of photographing these events, and will share some tips for taking great photos.
Bio: Mark Lenz is a self-taught photographer who really became interested in the craft when his son was a high school gymnast at Euless Trinity HS in the early 2000’s. Learning how to shoot non-flash photography in old high school gymnasiums at high ISO was the first challenge.Over the years, Mark’s interests have grown to include macro photography in nature, travel photography, air show photography, shooting WWII living history events and nature and bird photography, which helped him get through the pandemic without going crazy. Mark says, he has so many interests that he became a jack of all genres, but master of none. He has also given his time in recent years shooting charity events for several charitable organizations in the DFW area.

Tracy volunteers with the Coppell Special Olympics, and with local animal shelters and rescue organizations. To help animals in need, she donates her time and camera to a number of local shelters and rescue organizations; a great picture of a pet means a better chance at adoption. Tracy describes herself being a frustrated artist until the day she picked up a camera and by accident, created an image that would change everything. She had found a creative home in photography. She is “an escapee from the corporate world”, retiring from an international sales career at the end of 2013, and is now a Dallas - Fort Worth pet, equine, and family photographer. She has been to every continent save for Antarctica, adding that she will get there one day!
All of her ‘kids’ have four legs (3 dogs and a cat who rules the roost), She is a shelter and rescue volunteer, a horse crazy girl, and Africa is her favorite place on the planet, Tracy says she loves a good romantic comedy and is a voracious reader of just about everything, but especially books about animals. Program: Bird Photography from the Great Salt Lake
Bio: During the last couple of Covid years, many of us have gotten into bird photography. Mary Anne Karren’s bird photography shows off her creativity. But what is most amazing about her work is that she has only been taking photos for a couple of years.
She lives near the Great Salt Lake in Utah and that is where she photographs mostly. It is a dying ecosystem and its conservation is her passion.
This YouTube video is actually an interview of Ms. Karren. It is one hour long but answers all the questions that we would ask if she was right in front of us.
I think it will inspire the newest of the photographer’s among us, teach the more experienced of us some new things and even better, inspire us to arms to protect the dying Great Salt Lake.

Program: Trekking in Nepal
Come along with Jim Hamel on a 13 day trek through the Himalayas to the Mt. Everest Base camp. You'll get the details of how he captured his landscape photos and portraits of Nepal. You'll also learn about packing lightweight, traveling during Covid, dealing with altitude, and, of course, about the people, culture and landscape of Nepal.
Bio: Jim grew up in St. Louis, and still really considers himself a St. Louis guy even though he hasn't lived there in over 25 years. He has been in the DFW area for that time, and for the last 15 years has lived in Southlake with his wife and two teenage daughters.
Jim attended law school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and then went into private practice, where he remained for 12 years. In 2010 he walked away from law firm life and began the hard-core pursuit of photographing the world. Jim didn’t quit to travel and do photography, but that’s what ended up happening. His new job offered opportunities to travel all over the country and photograph it.
For the last 10 years, most of his free time has been spent either photographing, editing pictures, or learning new techniques. In addition, he takes several photography trips every year. His job involves a certain amount of travel and leaves him some room to take pictures.
Jim says most of his work is a "scape" of some sort - either a landscape, seascape, or cityscape. "I seem to be drawn to coastal scenes most of all. That is probably partly because they are so alien to me, having always lived in a land-locked place, but mostly because they are just cool."
Jim was awarded the title of “Master of Photography” by the Professional Photographers of America. In addition, he is a Certified Professional Photographer of the PPA and a Certified Drone Photographer of the PPA.

Program: Landscape & Travel
For those people with a sense of adventure and a little patience, now is the perfect time to travel to be able to photograph destinations without the typical tourists. Last year crowds were at about 25% of usual throughout Europe, so take advantage while you can.
Bio: Growing up in small town America in Western NY produces a strong urge to leave and explore the world, which is something that Scott has been doing ever since. Graduating from UTA with a business degree showed him that he wasn’t cutout for the usual road that most people travel. So he went in search of a career that fit his lifestyle and personality, photography. Where it went from being a student at Richland college in Dallas and manifested itself into becoming an instructor there.
He and his wife now teach painting and photography workshops via their Art Treks company. Some of their workshop destinations have included Tuscany, Paris, Scotland, Greece, Croatia, Iceland, Spain, Provence, Cinque Terre, Ireland, Slovenia and Portugal, along with numerous future locations. They have also starting doing Foodie Treks, where it is a week of sampling some of the best food, cheese and wine that an area has to offer. Along with cooking classes taught by chefs and in restaurants.

Speaker: Nikola Olic
Website: www.StructurePhotography.org
Program: Poetic Beauty in Architectural Photography
Abstract structural photography offers playful re-imagination of what urban structures might represent, both in a real physical sense and a personal experimental one, drawing us closer to the cities we explore by assigning these structures a purpose and meaning that reflects us, our stories, and our histories.
Through exploring their surroundings, urban structure give us the ability to, in essence, paint with architecture. By re-appropriating these urban entities as our colors and brushes, these guerrilla photography efforts help create new intellectual and philosophical visual spaces with equal parts formalism, precisionism and architectural abstraction.
Bio: Nikola Olic is a Serbian photographer living and working right here in Dallas, Texas, focusing on architectural photography and abstract structural quotes that reimagine architecture in playful, dimensionless and disorienting ways. He is represented by Afterimage Gallery in Dallas, Subject Art Gallery in New York City, Espaces Atypiques in France, and Bartselona Gallery in Serbia.
Every photograph in his collection includes the exact coordinates where each photograph was taken, offering a quick return to the real world in which the structure exists, of cars, noise, buildings and people, and is intended as a demystifying tool, reminding us that these structures -- beautiful or otherwise -- are among us on every corner, in cities we visit or cities where we live.
His photography has appeared in publications and public and private collections around the world, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Wired Magazine, The Guardian Newspaper, BBC News, Forbes, Dezeen, USA Today and many others. He was also featured in all major local media outlets, including The Dallas Morning News, The Dallas Observer, Dallas Architecture Forum, Dallas Center for Photography, Advocate Magazine, Patron Magazine, D Magazine and many
others.

Speaker: Youtube videos from Tim Sheilds & Michael Kenna
Program: Landscape Photography & Minimal Landscape Photography Tips
Minimalism, is a photography technique that many of us are not that familiar with, and it is the subject for our competition in November.
I scoured YouTube looking for videos that would help us out with that subject and I think I came up with two that will both educate and inspire us to take better minimalist photographs.
The first one, entitled, “Landscape Photography/Minimalist Photos: Want to Win Photo Contests?” By Tim Shields will give us some ideas about what makes a good minimalist photograph. Tim Shields is an award-winning landscape photographer and
eCommerce coach. He specializes in outdoor landscape photography and he holds the designation of Master Photographer in Fine Art from Master Photographers International. He lives in White Rock, BC, Canada.
The second video, entitled “6 Minimal Landscape Photography Tips I Learned from Michael Kenna”, by Photo Tom will focus on the work of one of the most famous of the minimalist photographers, Michael Kenna. Michael Kenna is a British photographer best known for his black-and-white images of unpopulated landscapes and urban scenes.
He often employs long exposure times that he further emphasizes in the dark room. He attend the London College of Printing, where he learned commercial photography techniques. He lives and works in Seattle, WA.

David’s photographs were on exhibit at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History in early 2016. Photographs are also on HaresPhotography. com. David has conducted lectures about photography and the National Parks with over 10,000 people and over 3500 kids in the schools.
David Hares II has been exploring our great country’s National parks for the past 10 years. So far David’s adventures have taken him over 100,000 miles and through all 50 states in an attempt to capture the beauty and uniqueness of our country’s treasures. This lecture is an interactive exploration of our National Parks and many of the places in between. These photographs are meant to trigger memories of times you may have spent in these wonderful places, to inspire you to see them again or experience them for the first time. We will discuss the uniqueness of different parks, photography techniques, and various stories that occurred in order to get these photographs. In addition we will discuss photographic tips and tricks to capture better photographs.

Jay Miller is a contract photographer to most of the major aircraft manufacturers in the US including Boeing, Airbus, Northrop Grumman, Bell, Sikorsky, and Lockheed Martin. He has flown in over 100 different aircraft types spanning everything from hot air balloons to high-performance military fighters.

Together we work to understand how you might navigate the formation of your own artistic and creative vision as a photographer.
1. What vision is and what vision isn’t
2. The path you might follow towards your discovery of your vision. What parts are processes and what parts are simply undefinable.
3. The cohesion of action and principles and how they work together.
4. How clarity might be the most important part of this journey and where you can get more of it on a regular basis.
5. How there are few formulas to find your vision but plenty of ways to rule things out that won’t work for you.
6. The pitfalls you might encounter along the way (Trying to seek clarity too soon, thinking you need to know your vision to start your work, etc.)
7. Finding how and where you come alive in your creative process with tools to discover and fill in what might be missing.
8. How we can find ourselves through photography & creation and live fuller lives.
9. Experiencing growth beyond the technical and also growth without overwhelm.
10. Discovery of some of the greatest truths like failure is not fatal, how perfectionism is crippling your journey, etc.
This presentation will help you to look at your work where you are in different ways than ever before. It will help you to define a little bit of where you are and where you might want to go.

Program: Wow, that sounds like an interesting job!
Glen Ellman is a photojournalist that specializes in documenting the fire service from inside the "lines". Working with the Fort Worth fire Department for over 35 years, he documents their many successes and some of their flubs (which aren't many). How do you deal with being harassed by bystanders that feel you are intruding on people at a bad time. And ultimately, what makes it an interesting job.

Bio: I'm an I.T. Professional with a passion for software and technology. I got my first mirrorless camera to take quality pictures of my kids, however, I haven't been able to put down the camera since. I'm mainly a Panasonic shooter with the exception of my Canon for Birds-In-Flight. I share my learnings at www.OpenFilmmaker.comand YouTube [Open Filmmaker]. The content is aimed at others new to photography and video. I've lived around the world in India, Africa, and covered a good part of the Bible Belt while growing up.
Photography to me is no different than an artist with a blank canvas. The end result is a reflection of the artist's skill and effort. I love the challenge it presents and the comfort I find in it. The TAPC competitions have really challenged me and helped me grow in my path. I'm proud to be among such talented photographers and excited about how much I've yet to learn. Mobile editing is something that has become a permanent part of my travels and I look forwards to sharing my tutorial with you all.

Bio: If you’ve read any Texas-based magazines over the past 25 years, chances are you’ve seen some of Russell Grave’s photos or read some of his words. Since 1989, he’s been traveling the state telling authentic Texas stories with his camera and his words—both written and spoken. A graduate of Dodd City High School and East Texas State University, Russell was an ag science teacher in Childress, Texas, for 16 years, where he was named Texas Agriscience Teacher of the Year on three occasions.
After leaving that career in 2009, he continued to photograph, write, and speak about his experiences and the people
he meets. In 2010, he began delving into television production. His first documentary film, Bois d’Arc Goodbye, was filmed entirely in Fannin County and chronicled a canoe journey he took with his brother, Bubba, as they traversed a creek before a lake forever changes the landscape. The film aired threetimes to a prime-time, national audience.
Recently he’s worked with such celebrities as the Robertson Family from Duck Dynasty television show, T. Boone Pickens, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Pat Green, and Tracy Lawrence, but he insists that regular people are his favorite subjects.
After living in Childress for 25 years, Russell now lives in the country near his boyhood home north of Dodd City, Texas, with his wife, Kristy, and their two children, Bailee and Ryan.

Speaker: Mark Lenz
Program: Texture/High Key
Bio: Mark Lenz has been a member of TAPC for more than 15 years. He is a
self-taught photographer who really became interested in the craft
when his son was a high-school gymnast at Euless Trinity in the early
2000’s. The first challenge was learning how to shoot non-flash
photography in old high school gymnasiums.
Over the years, Mark’s photographic interests have grown to include
macro, travel, air shows, WWII living-history events, nature, and
birds. Mark says, “I have so many interests that I have become a jack
of all genres but master of none.” Mark has also given his time in
recent years shooting charity events for several charitable
organizations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Recently after watching a webinar by Matt Kloskowski, he became
interested in texture blending. This technique can transform a
photograph with a distracting background into a combination of
photography and art. In our July meeting, Mark will discuss the basics
of texture blending and share a few tips and tricks he’s learned as
his skills developed.

Speaker: Frank Comisar
Program: Making Large Beautiful Prints
Website: https://durangogallery.photography
Website: www.scenicapture.com
Frank Comisar believes that a hard- copy print is (or should be) the end
game of your best photography. Digital images are easy to scroll by and
forget. But when you print an image, it becomes physical. As a print,
your best work becomes part of your daily physical existence, and
therefore, much more meaningful.
But there are many excuses not to print your images: it’s hard work,
time consuming, and expensive, and the prints never look like the image
on your screen. Right? Wrong.
To be successful, a professional photographer requires a cost-
efficient, time-sensitive, and dependable printing process. During our
August presentation, Frank will share his printing workflow and several
keys to successful printing.
Bio: Frank spends most of his time traveling throughout the Four-Corners area making new images for the gallery or leading workshops for aspiring photographers. However, occasionally he can be found hanging out in the gallery. He is always happy to discuss how and where his images were made.

Program: Mastering Birds in Flight
Join us this month to learn from Randall Patterson about bird photography. He’ll begin by going over the gear he uses and discuss settings in depth. Then he’ll share some basic tips and strategies for getting started and move to more advanced techniques for catching fast birds in flight. He plans toshare many tips and ideas for landing birds and will end with his hummingbird techniques.
The presentation is a mix of video and slide show, so participants can better understand how he captures such great images.
Bio: Randall was only six years old when his grandfather gave him a book about birds. He was instantly fascinated listening to him talk about every bird in the book. Through the years, this fascination developed into a passion for photographing birds. Randall soon realized he had a specific desire to capture birds in flight—not just to capture them flying but to captureevery detail of every feather as the bird moved through the air.
Acquiring the right gear was just the first step, gaining the skill to freeze the wings in extreme motion and capture them without blur was a must. He spent hours developing a quick-draw method, allowing him to catch nearly perfect shots time after time.
Randall works constantly to learn everything about his gear and mastering his craft. Along with continued learning himself, Randall is eager to share the knowledge he has acquired so far. See more of his photograph online.

Speaker: Russell Grave
Program: 10 Ways to be a Better Wildlife and Nature Photographer
Website: www.RussellGraves.com

Bio: My creative journey began as a former chorus dancer. My last show before launching a photographic career was “A Chorus Line”on Broadway.
I began photography in 1970 taking headshots of fellow actors learning the craft of making pictures.
Retiring from the theatre in 1990, my photographic career began in Dallas with clients such as American Airlines, Frito-Lay, American Express, JC Penney, ABC Radio Networks, Disney Cap Cities, and The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders ( 9 Swimsuit Calendars 1992-2000).Always having interest in black and white fine art I began showing my personal work at this time.
Many years of travel and shooting have produced a fine art documentary style of special places and special people all captured on film in tones of luminous black and white. Twenty-five exhibitions have been mounted and three monographs published of my work.
I personally scan negatives and print the files as acrylics and pigment prints on various papers matted and framed with archival materials. I began showing my work at art festivals last March and launching steverileyeditions.com where my current work may be seen. Several low numbered editions of my work are available.

Speaker: Tommy Savage
PROGRAM: Coastal Grizzlies of Katmai National Park
BIO: I have been involved with photography in one form or another since 7thgrade when my uncle gave me a cheap Japanese copy of a Roleiflex camera, and I spent the next summer at a friend’s ranch in southern California photographing movie companies filming western TV series like Wild Bill Hickok, the Cisco Kid, and Annie Oakley.
However, I didn't really get serious with photography as a hobby until 1983 when I joined the Lockheed Martin (then General Dynamics) Recreation Association Camera Club. I am also a member of the Fort Worth Camera Club and the Photographic Society of America (PSA). My favorite photography subjects are nature and sports because I like to photograph action.
Since 2004 in both Nature and Photojouralism International Exhibitions, I have won 30 Best of Show medals and 88 other medals in 11 different countries. I won Best of Show in the Heard Museum’s Nature Photography Contest three times, Dewitt Country Contest 3 time, Victoria, TX Contest 2 times, and Gonzales County once. I have had three images published in Cowboys & Indians Magazine. In 2006, one of my images was “Most Honored” in Nature’s Best Photography Magazine and displayed in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. during most of 2007. Also in 2007, I won the Grand Prize in Robin Pope Safari’s photography contest and was awarded a free safari in Zambia. In 2008 one of my digital images was the Photographic Society of America's Nature Image of the Year. In 2009 I placed 2ndin PSA’s Photojournalism Projected Images in North America Who’s Who listing. In 2016, one of my prints was the Photographic Society of America's Nature Print of the Year.

Larry Marx has been a member of TAPC for a dozen years or so and has served as a contest coordinator and president. He is also a 26-year veteran police officer with the ability to teach crime scene to officers, including photography. Taking photos of God's creation is his passion, along with singing and spending time outdoors. Ever since going with his church boys group to Big Bend in 1977, he's always wanted to return. When the opportunity came on short notice a few weeks before spring break this year, he jumped at the chance. It was even more majestic, beautiful, and geologically fascinating than he had remembered. He is excited to talk to the club about how we should make time to visit this amazing part of the huge state of Texas.

He strives to capture you as you are--simple, beautiful, and timeless.
