JOHN BEARDSWORTH
John hails from Dulwich, South London, UK. Photography was always a hobby to John, who would take pictures in his spare time and on business trips. He printed B&W in his kitchen-darkroom, and did a few weddings. After a slow "wet dry" route to digital, scanning film and adjusting in Photoshop, he switched to digital in 2003 and mentioning it on his site's news page (now called a blog) led to writing his first book on digital B&W.
Recently he’s been pointing his camera at historical re-enactment, particularly the Sealed Knot, but enjoys photographing a range of subjects. Most pictures are available as individual fine art prints (pricing here) and he still does a few weddings, portraits, and other commissioned work.
John, has now written 7 books:
Step by Step Digital Black and White Photography (2004) Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook (2005) Photoshop Fine Art Cookbook (2006) Adobe Lightroom Essentials (2007)
Advanced Digital Black and White Photography (2007) The Art of Printing Photos on Your Epson Printer (2009)
More recently he has been lucky enough to devote his time to photographic work, especially digital asset management and improving clients' Photoshop, Lightroom and iView/Expression Media productivity, and designing web sites.
His murky past includes many years as a chartered accountant, then in implementing financial IT systems.
I think this quote sums up what John is all about very nicely.
“No "artist's statement" here, no explaining my photos with existential anguish. Just a photographer and author based in South London who wants work to revolve around life - that's deep enough. Not a bad idea after 20 years in a suit?”
In preparation for our February contest, be sure to check out John’s website. John is truly a gifted photographer and author, and you will be glad you did!
